The furnace always picks the first cold night

Ignition failures, dead blowers, and heat that quits a week into actually needing it. We diagnose heat the same way we diagnose cooling: readings first, then a written price, then work.

What heating failures sound like

The noise, the smell, and the pattern do half the diagnosis.

01 / No heat

Clicks, tries, gives up

Usually the igniter, the flame sensor, or a pressure switch. Common parts, quick swaps, priced before we touch them.

02 / Cold air

Running, but cold

The blower keeps going while the burner or heat pump has quit. The board's fault codes plus a meter get to the cause fast.

03 / The smell question

Burning smell: which kind

Dust burning off the first cold night is normal for an hour. An electrical smell, or a dust smell that stays, means shut it off and call. If you ever smell gas, leave first and call from outside. The gas company, then us.

04 / Noise

Bangs, rumbles, squeals

Delayed ignition bangs, bearing squeals, duct pops. Each points somewhere different, and none of them is the house settling.

05 / Cycling

Heat in short bursts

A furnace overheating and tripping its own limit switch, almost always airflow. Filter, blower, or ducts, and often maintenance-grade cheap to fix.

06 / The scare tactic

The carbon monoxide pitch

A cracked heat exchanger is rare and serious. It is also the classic scare-tactic upsell. We show you the crack on camera, or we do not say the words.

Heat pump households

Heat pumps fail differently

More of Orange County heats with a heat pump every year, and their failures have their own patterns.

01
Frost is normal, ice is not
Defrost cycles steam and hiss. That is design. A cabinet buried in ice means the defrost control or the charge, and that is a service call.
02
The January bill
If the electric bill doubled, the backup heat strips may be quietly carrying the house. That is a diagnosable fault, not winter being winter.
03
Same crew as cooling
A heat pump's refrigeration circuit is the same physics as your AC. The technicians who handle one handle the other.
04
Older R-410A units
Still legal to run and legal to service. Refrigerant just costs more per pound than it used to, and we tell you when that changes the repair-or-replace math.

Questions we get about heat

Half the time it is a tripped float switch or a dead transformer, and occasionally just thermostat batteries. Check the batteries and the breaker first. If both are fine, the fault has moved into our territory.

Modern furnaces shut themselves down when something is wrong. The lockout is a feature. Forcing it through repeated lockouts stresses the igniter and the board. A CO alarm or a gas smell is a different category: stop, get out, call.

That is airflow, not the furnace. Dampers, duct sizing, and return placement, measured room by room and corrected. It is its own visit, air balancing, and it fixes the complaint the furnace keeps getting blamed for.

Twenty years is past design life, so we price the repair honestly and tell you what else is near failure. Some old furnaces have a cheap year left in them, and some are done. You decide with both numbers in front of you.
